Tips & Tricks

📑

Catalog, Then Two Tabs

Your Catalog is the master list of everything you buy; open it from the dashboard, or from the menu under "Catalog". Tap a store card to start a trip, and two tabs take over: Plan lets you pick what you need this trip, and Shop is your checkout view. Build, plan, shop.

👆

Swipe Distances Matter

In the Plan tab, a short swipe right marks an item as Maybe, while a full swipe marks it Need. Swipe left to Not now. The further you swipe, the higher the priority.

✅

Swipe to Check Off

In the Shop tab, swipe right to check off an item, or swipe left to mark it Not here when the store doesn't have it. Quick and easy, even with one hand on the cart.

✏️

Tap to Edit

In the Catalog or the Plan tab, tap any item to expand it and edit the name, add notes, change the category, or attach a photo.

📷

Add Photos

Need to remember a specific brand or label? Tap an item to expand it, then use the Add Photo button to snap a photo, or paste one from your clipboard. Photos are compressed automatically.

⏭️

Skip, Don't Delete

Items you don't need this trip should be skipped, not deleted. Skipped items stay in your catalog for next time. Items added from the Catalog page or with a voice "add" command start as Not now; items added from the dashboard "We need..." box or the Plan search bar start as Need.

🛒

Review Your Trip

When you're done shopping, tap "Review Trip" to see a summary of what you got and what you didn't get this trip. Then select "Finish Shopping" to complete your trip. This clears your checked items and resets for next time.

👀

Hide Checked Items

In the Shop tab, open View Settings from the ☰ menu to control checked items: show them or hide them. Each household member has their own preference.

🏪

Organize by Store Type

Name your stores by store type rather than specific stores. Use "Grocery Store" instead of "Giant" or "Wegmans" if you buy the same things at either one. Add separate stores for genuinely different types like "Warehouse Club" or "Pharmacy." Your household always has one shared catalog, each item is just tagged with the stores that carry it, so you keep one set of "last bought" dates and shop wherever is convenient that day.

🔍

Search Your List

On the Catalog page, tap the magnifying glass icon in the info bar to search; inside a trip, the search bar sits at the bottom of the screen. Type to instantly filter items across all categories. Categories with no matches are hidden automatically, making it easy to find what you're looking for.

🤖

Auto-Categorization

When you add a new item, Cartful automatically assigns it to a category (Dairy, Produce, Meat, etc.) based on common grocery items. You can always change the category by tapping the item.

↕️

Reorder Categories

Open View Settings and tap "Reorder Categories", then use the up and down arrows to move each category into the order you walk through the store. Your custom order is shared with everyone in the household.

👥

Real-time Collaboration

Share your household's join code with family members. Everyone sees changes instantly. The header shows who's currently online so you know who's shopping.

📲

Install the App

Cartful is a PWA: add it to your home screen for a full-screen, app-like experience. On iOS, tap Share then "Add to Home Screen." On Android, look for the install prompt or use the browser menu.

📶

Works Offline

Lose signal in the store? Keep shopping. Cartful queues your changes and syncs them when you're back online. A banner lets you know when you're offline.

📋

Import a List

Have items in a note or text message? On the Catalog page, open View Settings and tap "Import List" to paste a list of items. Each line becomes a new item, automatically categorized.

🔑

Lost Your Join Code?

No worries. Ask anyone else in your household for it, they can tap Invite on the dashboard to see the 6-character code. No passwords needed.

🎙️

Voice Commands

Tap the mic button to use voice commands: it floats in the bottom-right corner during a trip, and sits inside the "We need..." box on the dashboard. Say things naturally: "we need eggs", "skip the bread", "got the milk", or "add bananas". Commands adapt to your current tab, just say an item name and it defaults to the right action.

🗣️

Natural Speech

Voice commands understand natural phrasing. Try "we're out of milk", "don't forget the eggs", "no on the bread today", "grab some chicken", or "they're out of avocados". Speak how you normally would , no special syntax needed.
